Broncos vs 49ers: Previewing preseason Week 2 for San Francisco
Significant injuries
One of the major contributing factors to the acquiring of Foster by the 49ers was due to the linebacker’s injured shoulder. Foster tore his rotator cuff and had to have surgery on it, and there were concerns it wouldn’t hold up long-term. When Foster was cleared for training camp, it was a significant step forward for the rookie.
So when it was announced that Foster was being limited in Thursday’s practice with a shoulder injury (AC joint), those concerns resurfaced with a vengeance. There were varying opinions on the matter, with some proclaiming the injury was a direct result of Foster’s offseason surgery.
Nonetheless, Foster appears to be just fine and Shanahan says he expects the linebacker to suit up against the Broncos.
Here’s the full list of notable injuries for the 49ers, based on the latest practice participation and ranked in importance:
- Defensive lineman DeForest Buckner (ankle) — Buckner sprained his ankle last week in practice, and it has been nagging him ever since. The team doesn’t believe it to be too serious of an injury.
- Linebacker Aaron Lynch (ankle) — As well as Buckner, Lynch sprained his ankle too. It happened at Monday’s practice, and will most likely keep him out of today’s game.
- Safety Jimmie Ward (hamstring) — Ward is still recovering from the hamstring strain he suffered during the conditioning test. Currently on the PUP list, Ward is expected back by the team soon.
- Tight end George Kittle (hamstring) — A lingering hamstring injury that flared up recently for Kittle kept him out of action for most of training camp, and it looks like he’ll miss today’s game too.
- Offensive lineman Joshua Garnett (knee) — Garnett had arthroscopic knee surgery recently, and is going to miss the rest of preseason. Shanahan said he is hoping for a regular season week one return.
- Cornerback Will Redmond (ankle) — In his comeback from a torn ACL, Redmond has hit a snag with the injury to his ankle. Redmond just popped up in the latest injury report for the first time this preseason, making his playing status murky.
