No. 2: Offensive Tackle John Theus
Picking up offensive tackle John Theus in the 2016 NFL Draft might have been a bit of a surprise, and it’s looking as if he’ll be phased out after just one season in San Francisco.
Theus wasn’t exactly a top-tier option, even as a reserve, for the 49ers his rookie season. At best, he could have been a swing tackle for the Niners, but even that role looks precarious at best.
Regardless of the would-be offsides call, Theus can’t sustain his block against linebacker Eli Harold, as shown in this drill (h/t Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News):
San Francisco brought in former Seattle Seahawks tackle Garry Gilliam, who could easily assume a swing tackle role. The same could be said of offensive lineman Zane Beadles, who also has the capacity to play all three O-line positions.
