No. 5: Super Bowl XIX vs. Miami Dolphins
The 49ers had a wonderful 1984, going 15-1 through the regular season. The Super Bowl was also wonderful, and dominant.
QB Joe Montana was superb, going 24-of-35 for 331 yards and three TDs, and also rushed for 59 yards on just five carries.
More importantly, the 49ers defense held record-breaking Dolphins QB Dan Marino in check. Marino had set new NFL passing yards and TD passes records that season. The defense held him to 318 passing yards, two INTs, and four sacks, led by Dwaine Board and Gary Johnson.
After trailing at the end of the first quarter, the 49ers offense went into overdrive in the second quarter scoring three TDs and taking a 28-16 lead at halftime. In the second half, the 49ers defense shutout the potent Dolphins offense and the 49ers cruised to their second Lombardi Trophy, 38-16.
Montana won the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award, and this game was the essence of domination, and a strong confirmation of the unmatched 49ers West Coast offense.
