Loser: Right Tackle Garry Gilliam

According to Grant Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, right tackle Garry Gilliam didn’t exactly have a strong showing during sessions open to the media.

Gilliam regularly gave up pressures to edge rushers Arik Armstead and Ronald Blair, according to the report. Gilliam’s primary competition is right tackle Trent Brown, and Brown’s primary issue is run blocking.

But Gilliam, who is supposed to be better in run support, won’t have a chance to start if he’s regularly pushed into the backfield. According to Pro Football Focus, Gilliam’s 40.2 pass-blocking and 37.6 run-blocking grades won’t be enough to ensure he lands a roster spot this upcoming season.

He’ll have to do more. And while Brown isn’t exactly the ideal fit for a zone-blocking scheme, Gilliam’s first impressions are less than desirable.

At best, he might be in consideration for a backup swing-tackle role.
