Loser: EDGE Aaron Lynch

Not long ago, I wrote a piece on why the 49ers should consider moving on from former standout EDGE Aaron Lynch, due to his (again) weight concerns.

Maybe I was a little quick to pass judgment, and I surely received a lot of grief for coming to this conclusion. But the reports of Lynch being 20 pounds overweight are concerning. Remember, this same issue took place prior to the 2016 season.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…

This 49ers.com promo video (h/t Grant Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat) shows a massive Lynch at about the three-second mark:

Lynch looks less like an EDGE and more like an offensive lineman.

For now, Lynch appears to be safe in San Francisco’s plans. But he worked out with second-team units, according to various reports. And everything general manager John Lynch has said about wanting players dedicated to football 100 percent seems to stand in contrast to Lynch’s dietary habits.

There’s plenty of time between now and the start of the season for Lynch to get back in shape. And we should expect him to do so.

But this isn’t the best footing for the talented pass-rusher striving to get back to expectation level.
