2017 NFL Season: 5 teams with the worst quarterback situations in the league
By Peter Panacy
No. 2: Jacksonville Jaguars
QB Depth Chart: Blake Bortles, Chad Henne, Brandon Allen
Nearly three full seasons of starting reps have shown No. 1 Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles is not equipped to be a regular starter at the NFL level.
Bortles, a first-round draft pick (No. 3 overall), has looked like a bust ever since the Jags picked him up after failing to get anything out of former first-round draftee, Blaine Gabbert, back in 2011.
Sure, 2015 looked as if Bortles was trending in the right direction. He threw for more than 4,400 yards with 35 touchdowns, against a league-leading 18 interceptions, en route to an 88.2 passer rating. But any notion of improvement came back to earth last season, where that last number dropped to 78.8.
The lack of any sort of consistency here is a major problem. And while Bortles should be helped out by the addition of standout running back Leonard Fournette, taken at No. 4 overall in the NFL Draft this year, it’s impossible to suggest a more dynamic running game will improve Bortles’ game.
His backups, Chad Henne and Brandon Allen, aren’t exactly worth touting either. There isn’t exactly a productive competition here.
It’s likely the Jaguars give Bortles one more year to prove himself. But based off past results, it sure looks as if Jacksonville will be searching, yet again, for a franchise signal-caller this upcoming offseason.
