Week 13 at Chicago Bears

Week 13 presents an opportunity for the 49ers to embarrass the Chicago Bears for a second time this year.

The first, obviously, being general manager John Lynch’s pirating of three draft picks in the trade-down that still landed San Francisco Solomon Thomas. Yeah, highway robbery.

Like the Niners, Chicago is in full rebuild mode. The Bears said goodbye to former quarterback Jay Cutler and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. And while there are some good pieces on the defense, this Chicago team is still going to be pretty bad in 2017.

Who knows whether or not offseason free-agent addition, quarterback Mike Glennon, is still starting by Week 13. Maybe fans are clamoring for first-round draftee Mitchell Trubisky instead.

Either way, this is a very winnable game for the 49ers.

Why San Francisco Wins

It’s possible, perhaps likely, the Bears have some very poor quarterback play this season. And the Niners take full advantage of that.

Chicago will have its fair share of 3-and-outs over the course of the game. These play right into the hands of the 49ers defense, which starts to hit a bit of a hot streak after a strong showing against the Seahawks the previous week.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan’s ground game goes off against a vulnerable Bears run defense.

Why Chicago Wins

Bears running back Jordan Howard managed to go off on the 49ers last season, and he’ll have to do so again.

For all their woes last year, Chicago’s defense was pretty solid against the pass — allowing just 3,598 yards through the air, seventh best in the NFL.

That kind of effort will have to replicate itself for Chicago to knock off San Francisco in this one.
