Rams Trade Up for Jared Goff
After two drafts with limited top-QB prospects, the 2015 NFL Draft offered a pair of projected starter-caliber QBs who were quickly snatched up by the two QB-needy teams at the top of the draft: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tennessee Titans.
The 2016 NFL Draft also had two top-QB prospects, and the team at the top of the draft, the Titans, drafted a QB the previous year.
The Rams, now free from their Bradford burden, had the No. 15 pick, and needed a QB. A move up from the 1,050-point No. 15 pick to the top of the draft would cost an estimated 1,950 points, or approximately one first-round and two second-round picks worth of value.
The Rams traded two first-round, two second-round and two third-round picks to the Titans. The Rams received the Titans’ top pick, and an additional fourth-round and sixth-round pick. The Rams selected QB Jared Goff with their top selection.
It was an initial win for the Titans, since they received the additional lower-round picks. It became an even larger victory when the Rams’ new QB flopped in his first season, and the Titans’ new first-round pick became the No. 5 overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Final score: Titans 3,980, Rams 3,089. The Titans ended up 891 points ahead, or the value of two second-round picks.
