Yes, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson is the first quarterback taken off the boards here in Round 1 of the NFL Draft. Not North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky.

The New York Jets have been rife with quarterbacking issues for some time now, and the need is as pressing as ever. A hunch would have one believing the Jets don’t want to take a chance on a one-year starter, like Trubisky, and would rather go with a proven winner.

Watson has defied the critics all along. And his impressive performance over Alabama — the closest thing to an NFL defense — in the College Football National Championship game is enough to convince New York’s decision makers.

Sure, Watson isn’t a plug-and-play starter. Questions will still be there about his ability to adjust to the pro game.

Yet the intangibles are aspects which the Jets need right away.
