No. 17: Running Back Christian McCaffrey, Stanford

As was the case with defensive end Solomon Thomas, a good number of 49ers scouts and coaches were on hand for Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey’s pro day.

McCaffrey is an intriguing weapon, especially considering the versatility he could display in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

According to a March 29 report from Denver’s 104.3 The Fan, the Niners were one of four teams “most interested” in McCaffrey’s services this upcoming season:

And this must have gotten some draft analysts thinking. At No. 2, McCaffrey is a reach. But what if San Francisco was able to trade down?

It’s a scenario laid out by USA Today Sports‘ Nate Davis, who mocked McCaffrey to the Niners via a trade with the Carolina Panthers.

One just has to think how Shanahan would use a player like McCaffrey in his offense.
