Round 5, No. 146: T Julién Davenport

Top 300 ranking: 148

A player I originally had the 49ers drafting in my first mock draft, I think San Francisco still selects the offensive lineman from Bucknell.

The 22-year-old, who is 6-feet-7 and weighs in at 304 pounds, is the colossal presence you rarely come across. That size on the line, particularly at tackle, is a trademark of the top-tier offensive lines in the NFL (i.e. Dallas Cowboys T Tyron Smith; Oakland Raiders T Donald Penn; Tennessee Titans T Taylor Lewan).

Here’s Davenport in action. At left tackle, look how defends the edge rusher (content sourced from Draft BreakDown):

The tackles are set for the 49ers. Left tackle Joe Staley is one of the league’s best and San Francisco is high on right tackle Trent Brown.

This selection is a future’s pick.

Staley is 32 years old and Brown is pegged as his replacement, and that leaves an opening at right tackle (if Brown does make the switch). Davenport, after learning from both Staley and Brown, would fill in that void.

The physical attributes are tantalizing and I think giving Davenport a few years of learning would accelerate his growth, a perfect storm for a late-round steal.
