Round 2, No. 34: CB Marlon Humphrey

Top 300 ranking: 36

Seen as as one of the draft’s top cornerbacks, Alabama’s Marlon Humphrey is who the 49ers go with in Round 2.

The 20 year old from Alabama possesses a rare combination of size and speed –Humphrey stands 6-feet-1-inch, weighs in at nearly 200 pounds and ran a 4.41 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.

And remember, this new 49ers team likes speed.

That mix of size and speed translates like this onto the field (via Ben Fennell at NFL Network):

That isn’t the only area Humphrey excels in; his pass coverage, the most important aspect in the secondary, is exceptional. Prior to the 2016 college football season, PFF wrote on how Humphrey was one of the best cornerbacks in the nation, citing his pass coverage as a strength:

"Tough to throw on, Humphrey allowed just 31 receptions from the 62 passes thrown into his coverage, going for 539 yards and two touchdowns, while breaking up seven passes and picking off three more. Even better, he improved as the year went on, allowing just 80 receiving yards over the final five games of the year, including just 28 yards in two playoff games."

Humphrey could be an immediate impact player for the 49ers, providing an influx of athleticism and strength to a secondary that needs it.
