Round 7, No. 219: RB Donnel Pumphrey

Top 300 ranking: 219

I mentioned earlier that I could see Shanahan wanting to replicate the versatility in the backfield that he had while in Atlanta. DeVonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman formed a 1-2 punch that was one of the best in the league. Freeman with his explosiveness and running ability, and Coleman with his pass catching, the duo was tremendous last season.

In Santa Clara, a different one-two punch will be created. The 49ers already have running back Carlos Hyde, a bruiser who has shown to be effective when on the field. San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey would be complement to Hyde.

Simply, Pumphrey was a production monster while in college. Look at this three-year span for Pumphrey (via College Football Reference):

Clearly the ability to rush the ball is there.

But with Pumphrey’s size, 5-feet-9-inches, there also remains the potential of being a pass-catching back. I can see a combination of Hyde and Pumphrey working together: Hyde being the workhorse, running the ball and Pumphrey coming out of the backfield as a receiver. A poorman’s version of Freeman and Coleman.

I think the difference of their games would be accompany another well.

The draft is going to be next big step in reshaping this 49ers roster. Some more free agents will be signed, but the majority of the work there is done. Looking ahead, this roster still needs some reconfiguring.
