NFL Free Agency: Grading All the Moves from Day One
By Eric Gamboa
Torrey Smith
This is the first of two wide receiver signings for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Torrey Smith has a putrid PFF grade of 46.1 but that grade is truly an unfair assessment of Smith’s 2016 season. On one hand, Smith did not have a very good season and on the other it was also because he did not have the ball thrown his way all that often.
Still, Torrey Smith does have proven ability to beat defensive secondary deep. What hurts Smith more is that he is not a complete WR. He is not going to attack the short and middle parts of field. Smith’s game is long ball.
Smith needs to go to a team that can utilize his speed while he still has it. The good thing about his signing is that unlike the San Francisco 49ers, the Eagles did not overpay for his services. Smith is an incredible human being but as a WR he has a very specific (but deadly) skill set when used properly.
With that said, he should be compensated like a No. 2 WR. not a No. 1. The Eagles are paying him according to his talents making this deal a great value for both team and player.
