No. 2: CB Darrelle Revis

Another big-name free agent, cornerback Darrelle Revis was once the league’s most feared defender in the secondary. “Revis Island” became a fixture in NFL jargon and #24 was seen as the best cornerback in the game.

That is no longer the case.

While the name is tempting, the 49ers would regret signing Revis. The decline of the 31-year-old was most noticeable in a matchup versus the Cincinnati Bengals, where Revis was handled by wide receiver AJ Green with 8 catches for 100 yards.

Green’s 54-yard TD is what most people remember from this matchup, and while the New York Jets’ secondary busted the coverage, it’s clear Revis lacks the closing speed he used to possess. Here’s that play:

As well as the on-field performance, off-field issues have surfaced this offseason for Revis –which resulted in the 31-year-old free agent turning himself into police after an altercation with two men that led to four felony charges and a misdemeanor charge for Revis.

Revis is by no means guilty in this particular case, but with the change of culture and owner Jed York’s recent unwillingness to sign players who may or may have not committed crimes, the baggage of a potential impending criminal case doesn’t make sense with this new regime.
