49ers: 5 FCS Prospects to Watch at the NFL Scouting Combine
No. 4: T Julie’n Davenport
Here at Niner Noise, we’ve already talked about Bucknell tackle Julie’n Davenport. The 22-year-old tackle offers a coveted ability on the offensive line — Davenport stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 315 pounds. His size is what makes analysts gravitate towards him as a prospect, and considering general manager John Lynch’s view that the game of football is won at the line, Davenport is going to be a player the 49ers should be eyeing.
With his height, Davenport also brings a 87.5-inch wingspan — a vital trait for an offensive tackle as they deal with edge rushers who tend to be more agile.
As well as checking off the boxes in the physical attributes, Davenport’s character has been highly regarded. Here’s his head coach at Bucknell on Davenport (h/t HERO Sports’ Brian McLaughlin):
"“He’s really learned the art of humility, and I think it goes back to his home,” Susan told HERO Sports. “He doesn’t say much, but when he says something, people listen. To be a junior captain with the players voting on it and then to repeat that as a senior. That says a lot.”"
With Lynch emphasizing the need for high-character guys in the locker room, Davenport’s humility and leadership capability, combined with his intelligence, is a perfect fit for these new 49ers.
Ranked as the 12th overall tackle on CBS Sports draft rankings, Davenport is being projected as a fourth- or fifth-round selection.
