No. 5: Trade With The Buffalo Bills

Pick: 10

Value: 1,300

With the 49ers No.2 pick valued at 2,600, the Buffalo Bills are going to have double the value of their current pick to at least garner the attention of the San Francisco front office:

  • 49ers trade second overall pick (2,600) to the Bills for their tenth overall pick (1,300), second rounder — 42nd pick (480), fifth rounder — 74th overall pick (29.4) and 2018 first round pick — (~3,000-590).
  • The trade value sits at 1,809.4 before the 2018 first round pick comes in, and the total value could reach as high as 4,809.4 (if Buffalo were to get the first pick next year) and as low as 2,399.4 (if Buffalo were to get the 32nd pick next year).

So, barring a catastrophic/phenomenal season for the Bills, the value of the swapping of picks would nearly equal each other.

Why does Buffalo trade up?

Well, the quarterback position is currently undecided. They could be scared that either the New York Jets, Chicago Bears or the 49ers themselves opt to go the quarterback route, and make the move up to acquire their man to lead the offense in the future, whether that be Trubisky, Kizer or Clemson’s DeShaun Watson.

Or they look to shore up their secondary — a need for them — and select Ohio State cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who is shooting up draft boards.

At the tenth overall pick, the 49ers address one of their needs (outside pass rush) and select Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster. Foster, paired with defensive lineman DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead and fellow linebacker NaVorro Bowman, make up the new defense heading into 2017. And they will have additional draft picks to work with in the future.
