No. 7: Running Back Mike Davis

Most NFL teams try to have a solid backup at running back — a change-of-pace player, who might even be an up-and-coming tailback capable of stepping into a starter role at any moment.

Heck, even some teams like the dynamic two-headed running back approach. Just ask head coach Kyle Shanahan, who employed Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman last year with the NFC champion Atlanta Falcons.

San Francisco needs a reliable, durable backup to No. 1 running back Carlos Hyde. That’s a no-brainer.

But it’s key fellow tailback Mike Davis isn’t that guy.

Ever since being drafted in Round 4 of the 2015 NFL Draft, Davis has done next to nothing to solidify a spot on the field. He’s been active for a mere 14 games over his two-year career and has an average of just 2.0 yards per carry over that time frame.

The 49ers need to find someone, anyone, else to fill this backup role in 2017.

Verdict: Cut
