Stock Down — Quarterback Blaine Gabbert

Where things matter for the 49ers’ quarterbacking issue is within the first-team unit. And quarterback Blaine Gabbert still holds the No. 1 job.

For now.

The problem is Gabbert hasn’t really done anything to showcase the job is his and his alone.

Gabbert’s first efforts against the Texans resulted in a 4-of-10 line with a lone touchdown pass to tight end Vance McDonald. Gabbert was slightly better against the Broncos — a 6-of-9 passing line, albeit without a touchdown pass.

Consistency and accuracy have been two gleaming weaknesses thus far in Gabbert’s two performances.

Considering how important these factors are in head coach Chip Kelly’s offense, it’s safe to say Gabbert hasn’t exactly proven himself as the legitimate option under center.

Maybe quarterback Colin Kaepernick is still deeply in the mix after all.
