Stock Down — 49ers Wide Receivers

We know the Niners are going to feature wideouts Torrey Smith and Bruce Ellington this season. Quinton Patton will be a part of the game plan too.

But who else?

San Francisco has a total of 12 receivers — primarily young and inexperienced ones — on its 90-man roster. This group is competing for likely six slots on the regular-season roster.

And nobody has really stepped up to assume one of the deeper roster spots.

Rookie wideout Devon Cajuste had a nice 40-yard catch against Denver on Saturday, and second-year pro Dres Anderson hauled in 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Christian Ponder. Those are good numbers to have, but there isn’t much consistency otherwise.

With rookie wideout Bryce Treggs (MCL) on the mend for the foreseeable future, this competition gets a little more interesting.

Don’t be surprised if the 49ers comb the waiver wire following the first wave of NFL roster cuts to see if any wideout candidates would be a good fit for San Francisco’s offense.
