NFL preseason football is merely about fine tuning a team’s efforts on the field and determining which players should make the cut when the regular season rolls around, right?

Absolutely. But it’s more than just that.

The preseason affords teams the luxury of putting likely starters and backups into situations they might/will face in the regular season without, you know, the actual results truly meaning anything.

Week 2 of the preseason is even more critical than the rest. This week marks the exhibition game most closely resembling that of the regular season.

So when the San Francisco 49ers square off against the Denver Broncos at Sports Authority Field on Saturday, August 20, fans and coaches should be treated to a close resemblance of NFL football.

At least for a quarter.
