Quarterback

Blaine Gabbert

49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert was named the starter for the Week 1 of the preseason and that will remain the same for Week 2, but under some unusual circumstances.

Gabbert looked a little lost on Sunday against the Texans. He started off with some inaccurate throws and, outside of his 43-yard touchdown pass to tight end Vance McDonald, didn’t look like a starting quarterback.

Gabbert finished the game going 4-of-10 for 63 yards and one touchdown.

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was held from playing on Sunday against the Texans to what was listed as “arm fatigue”. One day later ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Kaepernick would be out indefinitely with what sources called a “dead arm”.

49ers third string quarterback Thad Lewis was reported to have torn his ACL against the Texans and will miss the remainder of the season. That leaves Gabbert, Jeff Driskel and newly acquired quarterback Christian Ponder as the 49ers stable of quarterbacks.

So yes, Gabbert will get the start, kind of by default.
