How Players on the Roster Bubble Perform

The 49ers will need to trim their 90-man roster down to 75 players after three weeks of preseason action, and then the team will eventually formulate the 53-man roster prior to Week 1 of the regular season.

That means roughly half of the guys on the team right now won’t make the cut and, understandably, many are playing to save their NFL careers.

San Francisco will face a number of tough decisions with these bubble-watch players. Training camp has already given the 49ers coaching staff a good glimpse at risers and fallers, but actual on-field action will go a long way too.

Take your pick of any fringe player and, chances are, you’ll be seeing a good deal of him from the second quarter onward.

But there are some name to watch. Up-and-coming wide receivers Devon Cajuste, DiAndre Campbell, Dres Anderson, DeAndrew White and DeAndre Smelter are just some of the guys worth watching.

And we shouldn’t forget about undrafted free-agent wideout Bryce Treggs either.

Uncertainty at the wide receiver position opens up the door for this competition. Other positions — linebacker, cornerback, running back and the defensive line — demand the same attention.
