San Francisco 49ers: 10 Roster-Bubble Players to Watch in Training Camp
By Peter Panacy
No. 8: Defensive Tackle Tony Jerod-Eddie
Like nose tackle Mike Purcell, defensive lineman Tony Jerod-Eddie’s chances of making the roster increase due to the season-ending ankle injury suffered by Ian Williams.
David Fucillo of Niners Nation didn’t think Jerod-Eddie would make the 53-man roster this year, and Fucillo cited the drop in snap counts Jerod-Eddie had a year ago (300).
But Jerod-Eddie does offer a bit of flexibility in his versatility to move to the outside in various situations and packages. While this is a good thing, he’d still have to pass over some of the other depth options the 49ers have, including Purcell, in order to climb the depth chart.
And Jerod-Eddie’s chances of making the roster could still be hindered by guys like rookie defensive end Ronald Blair too.
Yet Jerod-Eddie had some decent moments against the run last year. With so many of the Niners’ defensive-front guys’ strength coming against the pass, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Jerod-Eddie work his way into some run-stopping situations.
Keep an eye on how the 49ers use him in camp and during the preseason.
