Right Guard

Starter: Joshua Garnett

Backup: Andrew Tiller

Finally, the 49ers reach a position where a rookie can start.

First-round draft selection Joshua Garnett is a plug-and-play starter coming off a 2015 collegiate campaign, which earned him the Outland Trophy — awarded to the best interior lineman in all of college football.

Known for his run-support capabilities, Garnett will be slated for the right guard spot his rookie season.

This will be intended to minimize Garnett’s liabilities in pass protection — an area that could stand for some work — yet give San Francisco’s ground game a few more options for opening up lanes on either side of the line.

If Garnett can’t master this right away, veteran guard Andrew Tiller should be the favorite to assume this same spot, which is exactly what he did last year.
