We all know the saying — where there is a right, there is a wrong. It’s no different in today’s NFL. When a team does a good thing, there is a wrong somewhere around the corner. The San Francisco 49ers are no exception to this rule. Niner Noise looks at five of the biggest mistakes the team has made this offseason.

The San Francisco 49ers were full of mistakes last offseason, starting with the hiring of former defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to be the head coach. And from there, there were further mistakes made with the hiring of Geep Chryst as the offensive coordinator, and Eric Mangini as the defensive coordinator.

All of these bad coaches and bad play-calling led to a dismal 5-11 record for 2015. The team lost more good players and, combined with the injuries, led to a disastrous slippery slope of a season.

Thankfully, general manager Trent Baalke and CEO Jed York saw the error of their thinking and promptly fired Tomsula, and then the majority of his assistants. This 2016 offseason started with the hiring of new head coach Chip Kelly and new coordinators in Curtis Modkins and Jim O’Neil.

Though it is easy to immediately say the hiring of Kelly was a mistake, the real “proof of the pudding” isn’t shown until the real games start and he and the coordinators are put in the fire.

So let’s see a few games under our belt before we designate the success (or lack thereof) of this coaching staff.

However, it is much easier to rate the players (excluding the rookies) who have played games in the Niners uniform. There are numerous players who have underperformed, based on their career statistics or where they were drafted.

Don’t get this piece wrong — it is not a witch-hunt exercise. There are players who we will agree with and others we won’t. Mistakes can be moves which were not made and can also involve off-the-field matters too.

So, without any further ado, let’s pick the five biggest mistakes the San Francisco 49ers have made this offseason.
