No. 9: Cornerback Tramaine Brock

The likeliest of scenarios entering training camp and the 2016 regular season would be defensive backs Tramaine Brock and Jimmie Ward occupying the Nos. 1 and 2 cornerback positions, respectively.

Brock is the elder statesman of this position, and he also graded out with the defense’s best pass-coverage grade (plus-3.9), according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required) and led the team with 11 passes defended.

So why on earth would he lose a starting gig, let alone not make the 53-man roster?

For starters, Niner Noise’s Jerod Brown suggested why Brock may not earn a starting job this season.

Remember, Brock is being pressured by young cornerbacks like Kenneth Acker, Keith Reaser, Marcus Cromartie, as well as rookie corners Will Redmond, Rashard Robinson and Prince Charles Iworah.

Does Brock still have an edge? Certainly. But it doesn’t guarantee his spot is safe.

Brock will also be a free agent after 2017 and, despite a relatively friendly contract, it’s feasible the Niners view Brock as a trade commodity worth moving prior to the regular season. With such a young cast moving up the ranks, and Ward solidifying himself as a starter, Brock may be worth more on the market.

Again, it’s not likely. But stranger things have happened.
