San Francisco 49ers: Full Depth Chart & Roster Predictions for 2016 Season

Tight End
Garrett Celek, Bruce Miller, Vance McDonald, Blake Bell
Players Cut: Busta Anderson, Je’Ron Hamm
Former fullback, turned tight end Bruce Miller may be the more viable weapon compared to fellow TE Garrett Celek, but the latter will get the start in standard formations. One should view Miller’s role as more of an H-back at this point.
Miller’s transition means the 49ers have a unique option in their offensive formation. Maybe we’ll see more of this:
One of the pressing questions here will be with 2013 second-round draft pick Vance McDonald.
McDonald, outside of his blocking abilities, has largely underwhelmed at the pro level. Four tight ends on the Niners roster may be a bit of a stretch — five, if you count long-snapper Kyle Nelson — but I feel McDonald makes the 53-man roster to start the season.
After all, McDonald tends to have good preseason campaigns, and another would save his tenure in San Francisco for now.
The 49ers will also continue to be patient with former collegiate quarterback, turned tight end Blake Bell. But this means Busta Anderson likely finds his way onto the practice squad or off the team altogether.
