The San Francisco 49ers have entered into the 2016 offseason with a young and inexperienced roster filled with question marks at numerous position groups. With the competitive fire at a fever pitch, which battles will burn the hottest?

The first week of Organized Team Activities, or OTAs, is in the books and it has only become clear that, well, very little is clear among the San Francisco 49ers starting roster.

At this point, it would be far easier to identify position groups that were settled, and even then, there is very little guarantee among a rebuilding team.

For the second year in a row, the 49ers have hired a brand new coaching staff.

Couple the new regime with a very quiet free agency period and it is clear that management is allowing the team to compete with itself, giving the chance for younger players to emerge and develop.

49ers Team Reporter Joe Fann highlights general manager Trent Baalke’s mindset in regards to roster depth:

“You can never have enough skill at that position. You can never have enough competition at that position.”

Newly hired head coach Chip Kelly has always elected to determine his starters by earning their role through position battles, and for better or worse, general manager Trent Baalke has provided him with a roster overflowing with competition.
