2013 NFL Draft

General manager Trent Baalke’s efforts in the 2013 NFL Draft were slightly better than the year before, but the results on the field since then have been far short of what the expectations from this class actually were.

The 49ers generated just two starters out of 11 picks that year — safety Eric Reid — and still have a number of backups and depth players vying to stay with the organization.

The Picks

  1. Safety Eric Reid, LSU
  2. Defensive End Tank Carradine, Florida State
  3. Tight End Vance McDonald, Rice
  4. Linebacker Corey Lemonier, Auburn
  5. Wide Receiver Quinton Patton, Louisiana Tech
  6. Running Back Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina
  7. Defensive Tackle Quinton Dial, Alabama
  8. Linebacker Nick Moody, Florida State
  9. Quarterback B.J. Daniels, South Florida
  10. Offensive Lineman Carter Bykowski, Iowa State
  11. Cornerback Marcus Cooper, Rutgers

San Francisco traded up in Round 1 to land Reid, and he remains one of the key figureheads in the 49ers secondary to this day.

But defensive end Tank Carradine never replicated the pass-rushing potential he flashed at Florida State. Part of it was due to injury — he missed all of 2013 — and likely due to him being more of a traditional edge-rusher in a 4-3 defensive scheme. The 49ers are now hoping Carradine can make a comeback as more of an outside linebacker-type or edge-rusher this season, per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Tight end Vance McDonald has been plagued by injuries and poor hands since joining the team in the second round of the 2013 draft. With veteran tight end Vernon Davis out of the picture, 2016 may be McDonald’s last chance to shine with the 49ers.

Wide receiver Quinton Patton, still with the Niners, is in a similar boat as McDonald.

Running back Marcus Lattimore, following a gruesome knee injury at the collegiate level, never made it into NFL action and retired in 2014. He’s now working on various charitable causes in South Carolina.

Defensive tackle Quinton Dial remains a mainstay of the 49ers defensive line.

Linebacker Nick Moody ended up with the Seattle Seahawks after spending his first two years as a 49ers backup. He’s now a free agent.

Quarterback B.J. Daniels couldn’t make the 49ers roster in 2013 after an impressive preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He bounced around a bit before signing with the New York Giants this offseason.

Offensive tackle Carter Bykowski ended up with the Minnesota Vikings during the 2014 season and is still there.

Cornerback Marcus Cooper was picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs after failing to make the 49ers 53-man roster in 2013. The Chiefs elected not to keep him for the 2016 season, and Cooper is now a free agent.
