Grading Each 49ers Selection in the 2016 NFL Draft
Aaron Burbridge, WR, Michigan State
Burbridge seems to be a developmental prospect, but he has some upside. He ran a 4.49 40 yard dash at the NFL scouting combine and a 4.53 at his pro day workout. According to Gil Brandt of NFL.com and Sirius/XM Satellite radio, Burbridge had a great pro day that enhanced his draft status.
"Wide receiver Aaron Burbridge — 6-0, 205 — ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 and 4.49 seconds. He had a really good workout. He made a great catch of a Cook pass along the sidelines at the pro day. Burbridge’s pro day enhanced his position in the draft."
In the 49ers receiver room, there is Torrey Smith, Bruce Ellington, Quinton Patton, DeAndrew White, Jerome Simpson, and DeAndre Smelter. They are all currently ahead of Burbridge on the depth chart. I would expect Smelter, Smith, Ellington, and White to be shoe-ins in that order. That leaves Burbridge to compete with Patton, Simpson and whomever else the 49ers bring in for their camp roster. Hopefully Anquan Boldin will be back soon.
Burbridge will probably make the team if Chip Kelly likes him. Mark Dulgerian seems to think Chip may have spotted something.
"Connor Cook’s favorite target last season lacks dynamic qualities as a receiver but he’s adept at working the short to intermediate parts of the field. His comfort with crossers and timing routes likely caught Chip Kelly’s attention."
Overall, I would say that this was a solid pick for the 49ers, who needed receiver depth.
Overall Grade: B- or (7/10)
