2016 NFL Draft: Early Projections for 49ers 11 Picks
By Rob Lowder
John Theus, OT, Georgia
Offensive tackle John Theus, after Blair, was the second pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.
At 6’6″ and 315 pounds, Theus was a four-year starter at Georgia, making his name against tough SEC competition.
Outside of his size and experience, Theus has little to “wow” you as an offensive lineman.
His strength and athleticism seem to be in question, as some analysts cite it as a reason he was targeted for Kelly’s scheme, while others seem to think it is lacking.
Mark Dulgerian of NFL.com states, “Theus’ athleticism jumps out on film, so it isn’t surprising Chip Kelly added him. Kelly values technically sound, mobile linemen and Theus checks those boxes.”
On the other hand, Rob Rang of CBSSports.com offers a different view:
"…Theus is relatively “proven,” but he doesn’t possess ideal athleticism for blocking on the perimeter and may be too tall to move inside to guard. He’s experienced enough to be thrown into the fire early in his NFL career, but there is some concern that he’s already maxed out."
It seems the jury is still out on Theus’ ability, but with Trenton Brown being earmarked as the current favorite for the starting role, Theus will be in competition with Erik Pears for the next man up on the depth chart.
That is a competition Theus should easily win.
