Round Three, Pick Five–No. 68 Overall

Tyler Boyd, Wide Receiver–Pitt

College Statistics

The list of receivers on the 49ers depth chart behind Torrey Smith is full of guys who haven’t proven much. As such, if Tyler Boyd is still available in the third round, the 49ers should grab him in hopes that he’ll insert himself into the conversation for one of the top receiving spots.

While head coach in Philadelphia, Chip Kelly carried six receivers on the active roster. It’s reasonable to assume he’ll do the same in San Francisco. Boyd would likely earn one of those spots.

Although smaller than DeAndre Smelter and Eric Rogers–Boyd is 6’1 1/2″ and just 197 pounds–the former-Pitt receiver brings incredibly strong hands and fluid open-field running. He was charged with a DUI in June of 2015 and may be pushed slightly deeper on draft boards as a result. If Boyd is there in the third round, the team shouldn’t hesitate to grab him.

It’s unlikely that Boyd is available in the third round but we’ve seen crazier draft-day slips. The 49ers would be able to land one of the most dynamic receivers in the entire draft class.
