The San Francisco 49ers will likely use one of their 12 picks in the upcoming 2016 NFL Draft to select a quarterback. Many fans and draft analysts expect them to be interested in the top-tier quarterbacks that project to go in the first round but the team will need to have rankings prepared in the event they miss out on a quarterback early.
They could also elect to wait, deciding that some of the later guys available make the most sense for the team moving forward. Regardless of which rookie comes in, he’ll be expected to compete with incumbents Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick for playing time.
When scouting departments begin developing a strategy to approach the draft, they include Big Boards. A Big Board could be the team’s entire rankings, inclusive of all positions, or it could also be individually separated by position. Oftentimes, teams make multiple boards that reflect both the overall rankings, as well as the positional rankings.
