Round 2: S Vonn Bell, Ohio State

San Francisco already has four players on the roster capable of being a starting safety: Eric Reid, Antoine Bethea, Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward.

So why not make a position of strength even stronger? And if recent history continues, general manager Trent Baalke will take yet another safety in one of the first two NFL draft rounds. In 2013, it was Reid. 2014 brought in Ward and last year the Niners tabbed Tartt.

Imagine a scenario in which the 49ers were able to employ a crop of five safeties on the field at one time!

The NFL is making attempts to make the game safer for its players. So the necessity of having more safeties accompanies the name of the position itself. More safeties on the field means a safer defense.

San Francisco’s second pick will be Ohio State’s Vonn Bell — a player who epitomizes safety on the field.

Safety first, last and always, right?
