After very minimal activity in the first wave of free agency, the 2016 NFL Draft will be essential for the San Francisco 49ers and their hopes to rebuild. With 12 selections, how will general manager Trent Baalke look to strengthen a depleted 49ers roster?

In attempting to determine the direction a team may take come draft day, you must first establish the perceived needs a team will look to fill.

In the San Francisco 49ers’ case, the first position that comes to mind is quarterback.

With Colin Kaepernick seeking a trade, it would be wise to assume that the organization does not see Blaine Gabbert as their franchise QB. Thus, a new and promising signal-caller is paramount.

Beyond that, the situation becomes a bit more open to interpretation.

The 49ers’ already struggling offensive line lost Alex Boone to free agency. A mostly unproven receiving corps is without the foundation of Anquan Boldin. The defense could use an upgrade in rushing the passer and NaVorro Bowman is still waiting for a partner in crime worthy of following Patrick Willis’ footsteps.

These are only a handful of needs that extend to nearly every position in all three phases of the game.

The San Francisco 49ers are now on the clock.
