Overall Grade

The 49ers may not have “won” free agency. But how many teams end up having overly successful seasons after cashing in big during the free-agent period?

Each year is different, so perhaps big free-agent spenders like the Oakland Raiders, New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars will see their fortunes improve dramatically.

And yet the 49ers still appear to have their own methodical approach on how to fix what’s going on in Santa Clara. They have a head coach in place, who should reinvigorate the offense, as well as a coaching staff — one that should be seen as an upgrade in comparison to a year ago.

San Francisco also stuck to its belief regarding on-roster players and rewarding them with extensions (Ian Williams, Garrett Celek and Quinton Dial).

Could the 49ers have been more aggressive on the free-agent market? Certainly. Would it be the right approach to do so? Perhaps. And yet the Niners don’t appear desperate to throw money around at all.
