Making the Call on the 49ers’ Remaining Free Agents

It says much about how bad the 49ers’ 2015 season was that kicker Phil Dawson was chosen as the team MVP.

To Dawson’s credit he enjoyed another excellent campaign despite his advancing years. He nailed 24 of his 27 field goal attempts and was a perfect three from three on kicks of over 50 yards.

With Dawson now 41, there is a case for the 49ers using a late-round pick on a young college kicker and saving some money in the process.

However, kickers as reliable as Dawson can be tough to find and, providing he still has the motivation to continue in the game, should be back with the Niners in 2016.
