Making the Call on the 49ers’ Remaining Free Agents
Ian Williams
At this stage in the offseason, it is a surprise the 49ers have not re-signed nose tackle after a campaign in which he was arguably the best player on the roster.
Williams ended the year as PFF’s No. 9 defensive tackle/nose tackle in the NFL, playing the run excellently while also producing a decent amount of interior pressure.
But, at the time of writing, Williams remains set to hit the market and should command plenty of interest around the league.
Although Mike Purcell has showed some potential at nose tackle and there is a lot of defensive line depth in the upcoming draft, it would be a major shock if the Niners do not make an offer to Williams. He was the anchor of their defense in 2016 and it is fair to expect general manager Trent Baalke to realise that and pay him.
