Dak Prescott-Quarterback-Mississippi State

Dak Prescott was a name to watch this weekend at the Scouting Combine. With a solid performance, he kept himself in the conversation to be the fourth quarterback taken behind Goff, Wentz and Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch.

Prescott didn’t blow anyone away, but few quarterbacks did. Prescott did exactly what was needed. Show up, throw well and display coachable traits to teams. One of those teams was the 49ers.

Prescott’s weekend in Indianapolis got off to a good start before he even stepped onto the field.

Again, the quarterback class in this draft features a large number of guys that are realistically mid-round guys but will end up being drafted higher based on the level of competition from other QBs. Prescott is one of the beneficiaries of this weak class.

Prescott is aware of the risk and reward that teams associate with players of his mold. He doesn’t have the prototypical size of NFL quarterbacks and his skills as a pocket-passer are developing, but he knows which players to mention as comparisons.

Cam Newton is physically superior to every quarterback in the league. And Russell Wilson has a special knack for making plays when his team needs it. Those two are exceptions to the comparisons that are so often drawn. But Tyrod Taylor, and his career trajectory, might be more realistic for Prescott.

If so, the 49ers might be interested in waiting until the second or third round to grab Prescott with hopes of developing him in Kelly’s system. He might not start for a year or two but, if the plan is to wait, Prescott is a good option to roll the dice with.

Prescott’s stock has been rising since early last week and will continue to rise throughout the next two months until the 2016 NFL Draft.
