2016 NFL Scouting Combine: Players the San Francisco 49ers Should Watch
By Peter Panacy
QB Jared Goff, Cal
Unlike Oregon’s Vernon Adams, Cal’s Jared Goff possesses the body type ideal for a pro-style quarterback. At 6’4″ and 210 pounds, Goff may be a little lanky but still has the frame into which he can grow and become a bona fide signal-caller at the pro level.
Goff is the top-ranked quarterback in this year’s draft class, per CBS Sports. But Rob Rang and Dane Brugler of CBS currently mock Goff to the 49ers at No. 7 overall. For note, North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz goes to the Cleveland Browns at No. 2.
The scouting combine may alter each prospect’s rankings on team draft boards though. If Wentz flops, perhaps he falls and/or convinces Cleveland to take a player like Goff. The same could be said if Goff makes a more impressive showing.
A wild card in this evaluation comes with the Dallas Cowboys. With the fourth-overall pick, Dallas could be eyeing a long-term replacement for aging veteran quarterback Tony Romo.

Perhaps Goff climbs up the Cowboys’ big board.
More importantly, the 49ers will want to see if Goff lives up to his reputation of making NFL-type throws — necessities in head coach Chip Kelly’s offense.
