No. 8: The 1990 49ers

Regular-Season Record: 14-2, first place in the NFC West

The 49ers nearly pulled off a Super Bowl three-peat at the end of the 1990 season after winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 1988 and 1989.

Of course, that came crashing to an end in the NFC Championship game versus the New York Giants, and fans are still haunted by running back Roger Craig’s fumble in the waning minutes.

Still, 1990 was an incredible year for the red and gold — a season that saw the team finish with a 14-2 record, the league’s second-best defense and an offense that averaged over 368 yards per game.

Naturally, quarterback Joe Montana was in All-Pro form as was wide receiver Jerry Rice.

But Montana’s days were coming to a close in San Francisco as injuries began to take their toll. Fortunately, the Niners had another quarterback in Steve Young waiting to get into the mix.
