Breaking Down San Francisco 49ers’ 2016 Salary Cap Situation
Tight Ends
[table id=29 /]
Free agents: Garrett Celek
Vernon Davis is no longer in the picture, so the 49ers have gone with quite the budget selection of talent at the tight end position. Blake Bell and Rory Anderson were added in the draft last season, while Vance McDonald was second-round pick a few years back.
As such, the 49ers have flexibility here. They do not need to add any players to the roster, but no player has a high enough financial weight to make them unmovable if the team wants to go get someone. Garrett Celek is the outstanding free agent, and he showed signs of promise. Plus, his brother, Brent, played in Philadelphia for Chip Kelly. I would not at all be surprised to see Celek re-signed on a cheap two- or three-year deal.
I would not expect the 49ers to be too busy in free agency here or to devote any high draft picks on tight ends. The position should look similar to how it looked last season.
