No. 6: Joe Montana Thrashes the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX

Result: 49ers 38, Dolphins 16

Quarterback Joe Montana backed up his first Super Bowl victory from three seasons earlier with an even more impressive performance against future Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino and the 14-2 Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX.

The 1984 49ers are widely considered to be the greatest Niners team to ever take the field. And their performance, capped by Montana’s efforts, were on full display at Stanford Stadium.

Kevin Lynch of SFGate.com described Montana’s efforts as the 49ers went on to crush Marino and the Dolphins 38-16:

"They went 15-1 that year and in the Super Bowl, Joe Montana upstaged the heralded Marino by throwing for 331 yards, three scores and rushing for 59 more yards. The signature play was halfback Roger Craig snatching a 16-yard touchdown pass from Montana and churning into the end zone with his big eyes gleaming and his high knees pumping. He looked unbeatable and on that day, he and his teammates were."

Not surprisingly, Montana was named the game’s MVP — one of three such accolades he’d receive during his career.
