No. 7: Bill Walsh Gets Carried off the Field after Super Bowl XIX

Result: 49ers 38, Dolphins 16

Legendary head coach Bill Walsh had his fair share of moments following Super Bowl victories — three of them, to be exact — but few stand as iconic as the image of the late coach being carried off the field following the 49ers’ 38-16 victory in Super Bowl XIX over the Miami Dolphins.

Walsh’s unforgettable moment is such for a number of reasons. Consider his struggles with the 49ers early on during his tenure as head coach. True, the 1981 season and victory in Super Bowl XVI cemented a legacy. But the 1984 season was proof Walsh had a dynasty in the making.

And San Francisco’s 15-1 regular-season record also speaks to that.

But the game had special meaning for Walsh as well. Super Bowl XIX was held at Stanford Stadium — the same venue at which Walsh had coached when he was in the collegiate ranks.

More importantly, Walsh and the 49ers’ victory over Miami did more than just reinforce and prove his system of football would work.

“People use the word genius and we usually scoff at that,” John Madden, the Hall of Fame coach with the Oakland Raiders and longtime NFL broadcaster and analyst, said following Walsh’s death in 2007, via Mark Maske of the Washington Post (h/t Boston.com). “In his case, I don’t think you can scoff at it.”

No. You can’t scoff at it at all.
