San Francisco 49ers: What to Expect from Chip Kelly’s Offense in 2016
By Peter Panacy
The San Francisco 49ers will look to new head coach Chip Kelly to reinvigorate what has been a lackluster offense. Despite plenty of holes within this unit, what can Niner fans look for out of Kelly and the offense in 2016?
2015 will be a season San Francisco 49ers fans and players would like to forget, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
The 49ers finished dead last on offense with just 238 points scored, and they ranked No. 31 in the NFL with 4,860 total yards gained. In nearly every significant offensive category, the Niners were at or near the bottom of league rankings.
But the hiring of head coach Chip Kelly changes all of this. There are plenty of variables that separate Kelly’s previous efforts with the Philadelphia Eagles and Oregon Ducks from the team he inherits. Yet it’s possible to draw up some conclusions surrounding what to expect out of the 49ers offense in 2016 with Kelly at the helm.
For starters, one shouldn’t assume San Francisco will automatically be a high-flying, potent offense. The 49ers lack sufficient talent across the board to suggest this.
Still, the Niners will be better, offensively, in 2016. It’s almost too simplistic to make that statement given the team’s unyielding struggles seen over the course of last year.
The factors leading up to Week 1 of the 2016 season will change. San Francisco will look to make roster improvements via free agency and the upcoming NFL draft. But what can we assume to see out of Kelly and the 49ers offense next season?
It’s worth a look.
Next: Better, but not Great
