Offensive Coordinator Candidate Joe Philbin

Joe Philbin is the former head coach of the Miami Dolphins and served as offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers from 2007-2011 prior to accepting the Dolphins job.

In 2011,his final season as offensive coordinator for the Packers, Philbin’s offense led the league in points scored, was second in giveaways and ranked third in yards. Obviously, the presence of one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Aaron Rodgers helped build Philbin’s resume, but the success of the Packer’s offense under Philbin is impressive nonetheless.

Philbin was fired by the Dolphins after a Week 4 loss and will likely have to accept a lesser position before ever having a shot to be a head coach again. The Dolphins have a young core of players on offense as well as a dominant defensive line and yet, the team has largely failed.

The lack of success from the team is not a particularly strong endorsement as Philbin searches for a new job.

Would Tomsula be able to explain to his staff why he chose an outsider rather than one of the coaches currently on the staff? The coach is left with little options regardless of where he looks to replace Chryst. Fortunately, almost anyone he chooses will be an immediate upgrade.

More from Niner Noise

Jim Tomsula will have to determine where the weaknesses of this coaching staff are and how to replace the weak links. The 49ers will almost certainly have shakeups in the staff this offseason. How big the changes are, well that all depends on if Tomsula remains the head coach moving into next season.

Will the 49ers elect to start over with a head coach like Kyle Shannahan, Sean Payton or Adam Gase?

Or will they re-tool this offense under the guidance of Steve Logan, Tony Sparano or Joe Philbin?

The final two weeks of the season will determine how the 49ers coaching staff looks as the team transitions into an offseason of rebuilding.
