11th-hour rumor links 49ers to 2 free-agent WRs who'd help right now

Either one would be a welcomed addition.

The San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver room is expected to look vastly different in 2026 than it has over the last few seasons, especially when Brandon Aiyuk is ultimately let go and Jauan Jennings likely signs a lucrative free-agent contract elsewhere.

Of course, the Niners could play their hand in the upcoming NFL Draft this April. It's a deep receiver class, which helps. But, in light of head coach Kyle Shanahan's reputation of being tough on his wideouts upon league entry, going the free-agent route might be the smarter option.

Especially if San Francisco aims to keep its Super Bowl window open with the current crop of rostered veterans.

With the opening of the proverbial "legal tampering window" kicking off on March 9, a final update from Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer pointed Shanahan and the 49ers in the direction of two likable receiving targets on the open market.

And the Niners should happily welcome either one of them, if signed.

Albert Breer links 49ers to Packers' Romeo Doubs, Colts' Alec Pierce

In a final mailbag prior to free agency's kickoff, Breer was asked about the Niners' wide receiver situation, and the insider admitted what every San Francisco fan knows too well: "help is needed, for sure."

But Breer then suggested two free-agent wideouts in whom the 49ers have interest, the Green Bay Packers' Romeo Doubs and the Indianapolis Colts' Alec Pierce:

"I’ve heard they have an interest in both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs on the free-agent market. And failing that, there’s a deep class in the draft, with Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. sticking out as a nice fit for San Francisco."

Pierce, a true deep threat, boasted a career-best 1,003-yard campaign with six touchdowns in 2025, and he's led the league in yards per reception in both of the last two seasons. At 25 years old, the 6-foot-3 and 211-pound target could immediately solve a glaring hole the Niners have had ever since Aiyuk went down with his 2024 ACL and MCL tears.

But Doubs might be the more consistent option, especially having played in a similar offense under head coach Matt LaFleur.

Doubs, similarly built at 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, had his own career-best season in 2025 with 724 receiving yards and six touchdowns. And while those numbers aren't quite at Pierce's level, the ultimate fit (and likely lower cost) could actually benefit San Francisco more.

Either way, though, the 49ers would clearly be happy landing either one of the two legitimate receiving threats, boosting their depleted arsenal of pass catchers with immediate-impact players.
