Packers vs. 49ers: 5 San Francisco Players to Watch in Third Preseason Bout
By Peter Panacy
Cornerback Jimmie Ward
So far, the 49ers have faced first-team quarterbacks Brock Osweiler and Trevor Siemian — not exactly the most elite of competition.
And neither truly put starting cornerback Jimmie Ward up to much of a test.
That won’t be the case with Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers may not have the services of wide receiver Jordy Nelson (knee) just yet, but that doesn’t mean the Packers aerial attack won’t be less potent. The future Hall of Fame quarterback can make most receivers look good.
So Ward, who finished 2015 on a very strong note, will get his first real test Friday.
An interesting perspective to watch will be what defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil’s press-man coverage does for the secondary’s ability to make plays.
Ward’s size — 5-foot-11 and 193 pounds — may come as a bit of a disadvantage jamming bigger-bodied receivers. But this technique also ensures opposing receivers don’t create space right from the snap.
Keep an eye on how Ward matches up with Green Bay’s first-team unit.
