It would be nice if the Niners could simply keep everybody, but they can't.

49ers shocking roster cut No. 3: Offensive lineman Corey Luciano

Right now, the only true center San Francisco is carrying on the 53-man roster is the starter, Jake Brendel.

Sure, the 49ers could look to the versatile Jon Feliciano as a backup option, and they also experimented with second-year pro Nick Zakelj there during the offseason, albeit with awfully bad results.

But having a backup center might have been a good idea. Had the Niners kept undrafted rookie lineman Corey Luciano, that would have been the case.

Fortunately, Luciano did clear through waivers and was subsequently signed to San Francisco's practice squad, and the team can twice protect him from being signed elsewhere this season.

However, aside from those two one-week protections, Luciano could easily be plucked away by another team, leaving the 49ers' backup center job a lot more concerning.
